Ensemble du Jour: 7-9-11

I couldn’t wait too long to wear the red version of the black & white dress from the other day.  I paired it with an olive embellished cardigan, also from Target, a skinny patent yellow belt and this cool vintage purse.

The purse was from an antiques fair I go to twice a year.  There a few favorite vendors that always have the best stuff.

The purse is strips of wood and opens from the top.  Perfect to take to our group lunch event.

The heels are Manolo Blahnik Uliepes – the perfect pump – and an awesome yellow.  They’re so pretty I took a bunch of shots so they’ll get a post of their own.

I had to redo my nails so I chose a neutral dark taupe – Zoya’s Pasha.  It’s a bit conservative for me so I’m not sure it’ll stick around for too long.

This was for a group lunch with folks I hadn’t met before.  Fun, comfortable but with some interesting color matching.  I hope I don’t bore you, because I love these two dresses and they are going to be fun to play with.

Can I See the Sunshine

I’m a big fan of color but there are two colors that I tend to shy away from.  The first is orange, which I love for accessories but the other is yellow.

But I’m trying to encourage a love of yellow.  I used to have a yellow bedroom growing up so I’m still a bit traumatized.  I got my Lemonade Converse, on pale end of the yellow spectrum. And today, I’m embracing the sunny side.

I’m smitten with these Manolo Blahnik Uliepe golden pumps ($575 at Barneys).  Such a pretty color and classic shape.  I want to wear them as an unexpected element paired with colors or patterns you wouldn’t expect.

But… they are pricey and selling out fast, so I’m searching out other options too.  I started with the sunny pumps but there’s lots in the color to choose from.

Francesco Morichetti Platform pumps – $130

I love these, but they are not quite as versatile. Patricia Rosales d’Orsay – $240

These are simple and bright too. Sebastian slingbacks – $155

And to get more summery and sandal-y, you can get these Sigerson Morrison Birdcage sandals – on sale for $435

And these are my favorites of the options actually. I just got these in taupe because I needed a nude low heel. They’re really comfortable and it’s more yellow and grey.  Sam Edelman Orly – $104

If I have to tolerate the summer trying to avoid the sun, I can at least wear some sun on my feet.  Any sunny favorites of yours?

Yellow with Envy

There are a few colors that I just cannot wear. I wish that I could but they just make me look sallow and jaundiced and, well, horrendous.

Orange is one but another is a bright golden yellow, like the Pantone color of 2009 Mimosa.

I had not thought about this for a while but I was watching Dangerous Liaisons today and I was reminded about how I would kill to be able to wear the classic combination of rich yellow and deep black, as Glenn does in this scene.

I also loved Gwyneth Paltrow’s Parisan outfit in View from the Top.

But a movie that really kicked off the love for this color combo was a very bad made for TV movie, Tears on the Rain, featuring a very young Sharon Stone.

I love the dress, the embellished gloves and you have to love the matching hair ribbon.

Of course all three of these ladies are blonds and, since I would also look horrible as a blonde, it isn’t going to happen.

But if you can rock this color, I will try and be happy for you and not jealous.

I love this coat which, surprisingly, is from Victoria’s Secret and pretty inexpensive at $129

I could probably get away with wearing these Oh Deer! Toffee “taxi” shoes. They are sold out now but I think that you can find them around.

Or I can get a pair of yellow gloves like Ms WendyB and wear them with a black coat. and boots.

If you can wear this color, share how or what you wear.

Hopefully I have better luck with 2010’s color!

Something Old, Something New, Something Changed… it’s not Blue?

Everyone remembers the other big character in the SATC movie. No, not New York! I’m talking about the Manolo Blahnik Hangisi “Something Blue” satin and rhinestone pumps.

You had to know that a heel that got this much attention and was so popular, wasn’t going be a one time shot. Okay, maybe you knew that. I thought Manolo would just integrate elements like the new heel design done for the piece, because I was totally stopped in my tracks when I saw the shoe in new colors on the Barney’s site.

Black –

and Yellow

The black is elegant but so safe (yawn!) and I like the yellow but it’s not as contrast-y as I would like it. Of course, I’m still in love with my blues. They are just an amazing color and you can’t help but stare at them.

I would love this in a dusky grey-lavender or even a icy white. Maybe even a flashy hot pink. What colors would you have picked?

Colors of Nature – Pellow? Yurple?

Here in North Carolina it is just moving through Fall and in to Winter. Summer was not so long ago but Spring still seems far away. Up north winter snows may have started and in places, I’m sure they are already sick of the cold.

Honey, you have a ways to go. But keep your chin up! Even if the stores and merchandising is all about snowdrifts and winter holidays, a few designers must have the warmth of Spring on their minds too. And they’re taking their inspiration from the color combinations that only Mother Nature could create:

Purple and yellow, in soft lavender and pale butter or regal purple and sunshine.

Le Silla likes these colors too. I love the combination of these two colors in their ombre wedges.

They look touchable and soft and pillowy. Perfect for drifting through flowers.

And they have a very unusual shape that is sophisticated but still playful. Get them and tuck them in your closet to hibernate for the winter.
